How to Back Up iPhone Live Photos to Windows Without Losing the Motion

A Live Photo includes still-image and motion components. A picture that looks correct on a PC may still be missing the associated moving part.

A Live Photo is more than the still frame shown in Windows

A Live Photo captures a still image alongside a brief moment of motion and sound. Depending on the export route, Windows may show only a HEIC/JPEG still, a related MOV component, or a rendered video. A perfect-looking still does not prove that the moving part was preserved.

Before exporting thousands of family photos, decide what you actually want: the still only, a playable movie, or an archive that keeps the original Live Photo components.

Audit one Live Photo from your own library

On the iPhone, choose a Live Photo that clearly moves when pressed. Note its capture date and the visual event. Export that single item using your intended method, then inspect the Windows folder.

  1. Identify the image file and see whether it has a related video component.
  2. Open the still at full size, then play any associated video to check that it includes the expected movement and sound.
  3. Determine whether your Windows software can reassemble Live Photo behavior; ordinary photo viewers often cannot.
  4. Keep the still and the motion component together if your archival goal includes both. Preserve the original file names or record their relationship.

If your tool exports a single rendered MOV, that may be ideal for sharing a clip but not equivalent to preserving every original camera component and edit option.

Prevent accidental loss during duplicate cleanup

A motion-component MOV can look like an unnecessary video beside a still image, especially when copying a DCIM folder. Do not delete it merely because filenames are similar. Likewise, edited versions and additional sidecar files may exist for reasons unrelated to duplicate imports.

A useful archive layout could put an event’s media in one dated folder with a small text index explaining the format. Choose a few examples and make sure both still and motion are recoverable before you remove anything from the phone.

Choose a suitable transfer method

Windows Photos via USB may export media differently from a photo-library exporter or a sharing action. Apple’s documentation should be consulted for current format behavior. When compatibility is more important than editable components, export a separate rendered video.

DropToPC sends accessible photos/videos with original transfer quality in Free, either locally or remotely at a slower speed than Pro. However, do not infer from original-quality transfer that every Live Photo’s paired motion, original metadata or non-destructive edit history will be reproduced identically in Windows. Test one specific asset first.

Passing the archive test

The Windows still opens at full resolution; any motion component you intended to preserve plays to the end and can be related back to the original image. After that, make a second independent copy. See why original and edited photos can look duplicated and the broader original-quality guide.

Want a dedicated wireless transfer from iPhone to Windows?

DropToPC uses QR-code pairing and supports Windows 10 and 11. Free transfers preserve original photo and video quality. On a local network, transfers are direct, fast and free with no cumulative volume or usage caps. Across different networks, the free tier still has no cumulative volume or usage cap, but operates at a lower speed than Pro. Pro adds higher-speed cross-network transfers and resumable, incremental automatic backup that can continue after a Windows restart and recognize newly captured, previously unsent photos.
